Constitutional Rights

The constitution was written by the people to restrict the power of the federal government in the lives of its citizen. All power not expressly granted the federal government is reserved for the individual and the states. The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments of our constitution, is what protects us from an overreaching, power hungry political class in Washington DC. We need to reassert our power as individual citizens. We have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms as individuals. We have the right to practice our religion as we see fit. We have the right to speak our minds when and where we choose. We have the right to a speedy and fair trial by a jury of our peers. We have the right to the pursuit of happiness. However, we do not have the constitutional right to happiness. We do not have the constitutional right to a job. We do not have the constitutional right to retire. We do not have the constitutional right to free health care. Those are for the individual to earn. We must always remember that incentive is the backbone of any capitalist system. If that is destroyed, the whole underpinnings of our society begin to erode. There is no free lunch. We have been starkly taught that lesson again with our federal debt load. Choices must be made for the greater good of the country, so that we may all have the opportunity for the pursuit of happiness.
